College Now Courses Fall 2024
College Now is a collaborative program between the City University of New York (CUNY) and the New York City Department of Education (DOE). It is a FREE transition program for qualified NYC public high school students. Lehman College Now Program is partnered with the High School of Computers and Technology.
Through College Now, qualified students get an early introduction to the college environment and a jump start on college coursework by taking credit-bearing college-level courses. This experience helps students build the academic skills that are necessary to be successful in college.
College Now students are highly motivated students who possess strong organizational skills and the drive to excel in and manage their academic and extra-curricular responsibilities.
College Courses Offered
We offer courses year-round, during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. These courses are taught by college faculty members. They will increase and promote objective knowledge, critical thinking, decision-making and imperative writing skills necessary to succeed in college and the workplace.
Which college courses can I take?
Based on Regents or SAT scores, high school grades and consistent attendance, eligible students will be able to take freshman-level college courses such as the following:
**BBA 120: Business Presentations (Wednesdays, 4:15 – 5:45 pm, in person on Lehman campus, 1 credit) In this class students will develop active presentation skills. Students will prepare for various business situations, practicing the different skills needed for in person and virtual presentations.
BBA 204: Principles of Business Management (Saturday: 10:00 am – 12:40 pm, online synchronous, 3 credits) This course introduces students to basic management concepts involving the theory and practice of attainment of organizational goals through planning, organizing, leading and controlling organizational resources.
BIO 173: Human Biology (Saturdays: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm [lecture] and Wednesdays 4:10 – 5:50 pm [lab], in person on Lehman campus, 3 credits) Survey of structure and function of human body with emphasis on concepts and current issues in human biology. (Students must have overall HS average of 85+ and 80+ average in Living Environment, Math and English classes.)
CIS 212: Microcomputer Architecture (T/Th: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, online synchronous, 4 credits) Architecture of microcomputer systems and its supporting system software. Various microprocessor systems, expansion bus design, memory design and management, secondary storage technologies and management, peripherals, and telecommunication technologies.
CMP 128: Web Development (Days/Times/Modality: TBD, 3 credits) Creation of websites using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. (Eligibility: Students must have 80+ HS average and 85+ Math average or 70+ on CC Math Regents exam.)
CMP 167: Programming I (M/W: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, in person on Lehman campus, 3 credits) Structured computer programming using a modern high-level programming language. Includes console I/O, data types, variables, control structures, including iteration, arrays, function definitions and calls, parameter passing, functional decomposition, and an introduction to objects. (Eligibility: Students must have 80+ HS average and 80+ Algebra II average or 70+ on CC Math Regents exam.)
**DNC 235: Dance Perspectives (Saturday, 10:00 am – 12:40 pm, in person on Lehman campus, 3 credits) Students will explore the foundational basic Afro-Caribbean dances, delving into the main concepts, steps and historical significance of the traditional folklore and social dance. Through practical exercises, students will enhance their body language and improve their physical skills and master
fundamental techniques of Afro-Caribbean dance. The course will culminate in a final performance on Saturday December 21. (No dance experience required).
ENG 111: English Composition I (M/W or T/Th: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, in person on Lehman campus, or M/W: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, online synchronous, 3 credits) English composition course that focuses on paragraph and essay development, summary and critical response to short texts.
ENW 210: Introduction to Creative Writing (M/W: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, in person on Lehman campus, 3 credits) This course focuses on the reading, writing and analysis of fiction, poetry and dramatic literature with the intent of developing students’ creative voices in these forms of creative writing. (Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete ENG 111 or receive approval from College Now
program)
HPI 101: US Health Care: Careers in a Unique System (M/W: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, in person on Lehman campus, 3 credits) Study of practice and interprofessional relationships of various healthcare professions, such as clinical nursing, physical therapy rehabilitation, occupational therapy and other non-clinical health professions.
LTS 242: Latinos in the United States (T/Th: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, online synchronous, 3 credits) This course seeks to contextualize the experiences and trajectory of Latino/as in the United States. Students will learn to recognize and appreciate the complexities of the Latino/a experiences in the United States and will become familiar with a critical vocabulary to facilitate complex discussions about broader issues of American culture and identity.
MAT 126: Quantitative Reasoning (T/Th: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, online synchronous, 3 credits) Survey of modern quantitative techniques in a variety of disciplines. Critical thinking and mathematical/quantitative literacy are emphasized. (Eligibility: Students must have 80+ HS average and 80+ Math average or 70+ on Math Regents exam.)
MAT 128: Foundations of Data Science (M/W: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, online synchronous, 3 credits) Statistical and computational tools for analyzing data. Acquiring data from multiple sources, techniques for efficiently traversing, storing, and manipulating data. Emphasis on statistical analysis and visualization of real data. (Eligibility: Students must have 80+ HS average and 85+ Math average or 70+
on Math Regents exam.)
MAT 132: Introduction to Statistics (M/W: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, online synchronous or T/Th: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, in person on Lehman campus or Saturdays: 10:00 am – 1:30 pm, hybrid 4 credits) Collection, plotting, and comparison of data sets, histograms, descriptive statistics, the frequency definition of probability, random experiments, random sampling, binomial and normal variables, confidence intervals. (Eligibility: Students must have 80+ HS average and 85+ Math average or 70+ on CC Math Regents exam or receive approval from College Now program.)
PSY 166: General Psychology (M/W: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, online synchronous or T/Th: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, in person on Lehman campus, 3 credits) Introduction to the fundamental concepts and methods of modern psychology. (Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete ENG 111 or receive approval from College Now program.)
SOC 166: Fundamentals of Sociology (T/Th: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, in person on Lehman campus, 3 credits) Sociology, the scientific study of human behavior, studies the processes and patterns of social interaction, forms of social organization, and the influence of social structure, groups and institutions upon human behavior.
SOC 230: Criminology (T/Th: 4:10 – 5:50 pm; online synchronous, 3 credits) The nature and significance of crime as a social phenomenon. Study of the sociological factors that contribute to and maintain the criminal institutional structure and the justice system in the United States.
SOC 235: Education and Society (M/W: 4:10 – 5:50 pm, in person on Lehman campus, 3 credits) Analysis of education as a social institution, the school as a social system, and the professional and organizational roles of teachers. Special attention is given to the problems of the school in the urban community.
